What are the drawbacks of latex mattresses?
Latex has real advantages, but it also has trade-offs that are easy to miss when you shop online. Most of them are practical: weight, cost, feel and first-week smell.

The quick answer: The main drawbacks are weight, price, a springy feel that some sleepers dislike, a natural latex smell when new, and allergy considerations. All-latex beds concentrate the first two. The drawbacks, and what drives each one
- Weight. All-latex beds are heavy to move, rotate and unbox. At the same 10-inch height, the all-latex queens we checked weigh 125 to 129 lb against Happsy's hybrid at about 106 lb.
- Price. Among the latex beds we checked, queen prices run from $1,399 for the Happsy hybrid to a $3,699 list price for the all-latex Zenhaven.
- Feel. Saatva, which sells latex and foam beds, says latex pushes back more and feels buoyant rather than giving the locked-in hug of some memory foam. If you want to sink in, you may not like it.
- Smell. New latex can have its own aroma. Happsy's warranty excludes naturally occurring latex, cotton and wool aromas, so a scent is not treated as a defect.
- Allergies. Latex comes from rubber-tree sap. If you have a latex allergy, talk to a clinician before buying; Happsy's own FAQ tells shoppers to consult a physician, and its warranty excludes allergies and sensitivities.
- Care and support. Happsy's mattress is spot-clean only and needs a solid base or slats no more than 3 inches apart.

Common questions
Are latex mattresses too firm?
